Current:

Retired teacher and coach. Current member of the Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education. I continue to volunteer coach (track) at Oak Ridge High School and to keep the track team website (http://www.oakridgetrack.org)

Background:

Born and raised in Gallup, New Mexico. Attended public schools graduating from Gallup High School in June, 1960. Active in school activities -- football, track, Key Club International, National Honor society, New Mexico Boy's State.

Education:

New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico

June 1964 - August 1965: Received the Master of Science degree with a major in Biology. Thesis: "The effect of metabolic inhibitors on the metabolism of Trypanosoma conorhini in culture.

Expenses financed primarily by USPHS Grant A1-05972 (Dr. John F. Roberts, graduate faculty advisor).

September 1960 - June 1964: Received the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Expenses financed primarily by athletic scholarship (football), summer jobs, and Elk's scholarship. President of the Junior Class.

Experience:

August 1971 to 2000:
Employed by the Oak Ridge Schools (Oak Ridge, Tennessee) as a teacher of science at the junior high level until 1995, then middle school level until present. Tennessee Career Ladder Level III.

* Teaching location -- Jefferson Middle School.

Principal Duties:

  • Science teacher at three different grade levels and four different subject areas.
  • Life Science -- seventh grade -- only one year
  • Earth Science -- ninth grade -- twelve years
  • Biology I -- ninth grade -- three years
  • Physical Science -- eighth grade -- twenty-eight years
  • Additionally, I taught Physical Education for one period over a two year period.
  • Coached football as an assistant and head coach for 19 years and during that time also coached track and cross-country. I started the cross-country program for both boys and girls and I also started the girls' track program.

Additional Duties:

  • Re-accreditation for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
  • Chair of three different committees.
  • Member of Faculty Council -- several terms.
  • Chair of the Science Department -- several terms.
  • Team Leader for Academic Teaching team -- two years.
  • Chair of the school-wide (four grade levels) committee to reorganize the school science curriculum.
  • Was third in the "chain of command" for supervising the school during the absence of the principals.
  • Coordinator and director of the ninth grade science fair for many years.
  • Students won numerous awards at the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair.
  • Two were Grand-Champions -- one each at the Junior and Senior Divisions.
  • One of these placed fourth in her division at the International fair held in Birmingham, Alabama.

System-Wide

  • Member and/or chair of textbook adoption committees -- several times
  • Member of curriculum revision committees -- several times.
  • Member of search committee to find a new Oak Ridge High School football coach.
  • Trip leader and director for Japan Sister-City visit to Naka-machi, Japan. Involved leading eight students and three other adults, speaking to Japanese dignitaries (in Japanese), and follow-up reports to Oak Ridge staff.
  • Coordinating and matching host families for visiting Japanese.

Awards

  • Certificate of American Ingenuity from the Edison Society. Presented at the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair in April, 1995.
  • Certificate of Recognition from Sigma Xi (Oak Ridge Chapter) Science Educator of the Year. Presented on June 11, 1991.

September 1969 - August 1971:

Employed by Union Carbide Corporation, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee as a research associate in the Environmental Science Division. Principal duties -- research concerning radiation effects and radionuclide turnover in mammals.

Military Service:

August 1968 - August 1969:

U. S. Military Service. U.S. Army. Assigned to the 2nd Division, 2nd Brigade Headquarters, 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Principal duties -- operations officer. Numerous other duties as assigned, e.g., member of courts-martial boards.

Highest Rank -- Captain.

August 1966 - August 1968:

U.S. Military Service. U.S. Army. Assigned to the U.S. Army Chemical Center and School, Ft. McClellan, Alabama. Principal duties -- instructor. Numerous other duties as assigned, e.g., investigating and prosecuting officer for courts-martial cases. Highest rank -- First Lieutenant.

August 1965 - August 1966:

Employed by the University of Utah as a research associate.

Principal duties -- research concerning the transmission of psittacosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever by ticks from mammal to mammal.
